「写真の世界に革命が起きています」 - と1行目に書かれていて、少々戸惑った。
「ピント合わせのないカメラ」 - 続いてそう書かれていた。それなら枯れた技術としてパンフォーカスというのがある。
続いて書かれていた「Lytro」をネット検索して、納得とともに驚いた。何が起きているのか、技術的にまったく理解できないところがまた理解できなかった。これすごい＆おもしろい。ようやく今日になって我に返り、ブログに投稿しようと思った次第...。
「撮影時のピント合わせ」という概念のないカメラのお話。

Lytroでは、写真の焦点は撮影後に任意に決められるし、方向も変えられる。3D写真にもできる。ハリーポッター・ミーハーの本誌のJason Kincaid、喜びなさいよ。今度のハリポタは、きっと3Dになるわよ。Lytroはこれまで、NEA、K9 Ventures、Greylock Partners、Andreessen Horowitzなどから$50M（5000万ドル）を調達している。

写真は瞬間を捉えるとよく言うけど、でもこれまでの写真は瞬間を捉えていない。これまでの写真は、たった一つの角度の、たった一つの焦点における、光の集合を捉えるだけだ。プロの写真家なら、そのたった一つの光の集合が、その瞬間の最良の部分を捉えているかもしれない。でもそれは、ぼくなんかにはできない。しかしRenが開発した光界カメラを使えば、その瞬間を視覚的に表しているすべての光を、捉えることができるのだ。
そうやって瞬間の全体を捉えたら、そこから、後で好きな写真を取り出せる。
つまり、自分が撮りたい!と思った写真を、あとから確実に撮ることができるのだ。古い写真哲学の持ち主にとっては、まるでタイムトラベルして過去に旅するように思えるだろう。

People often refer to taking a picture as capturing the moment, but conventional photography does not really capture the moment. It captures one angle, one set of light, and one focus of the moment. If you are a professional photographer, you might capture the best parts of the moment. If you are someone like me, you most certainly will not. With Ren’s light field camera, you actually capture the moment or at least all of the light that visually represents the moment.
Once you have captured the moment, you can go back at any time and get the picture that you want. Specifically, after you take the picture, you can refocus, re light, and re-orient the shot.
Essentially, you can take the picture you wish you would have taken after the fact. If you are used to the old paradigm, it’s like travelling backwards through time. You can take a picture then figure out what you really wanted then go back through time and take that picture. And oh by the way, you can view the pictures in 3D. Way.

米カリフォルニア州マウンテンビューに本社を置く新興企業Lytroは現地時間2011年6月22日、「デジタルカメラの歴史で最大のイノベーションとなる製品を開発した」と発表した。光照射野センサーによって、光線の色や明暗度、方向といった被写体のすべての光線情報を記録する。このため後から自由にピントの合う場所を変更できる。従来のカメラは指向性情報を記録せずに、単純に光線情報を足して一つの光線として記録しており、この点で大きく異なるとしている。
CEO Ren Ng氏は、2011年中にカメラ本体を発売予定としている。どのような形をしてるのかも不明。また、価格は1ドル以上、1万ドル以下ということらしい。
